Causes and signs of skin aging

According to various researches, 90% of the causes of skin aging comes from sunlight, and only 10% because of genetics. Basically, skin aging is created from these 2 main causes:

Intrinsic causes (intrinsic skin aging): Is the phenomenon of skin aging over time. The older we get, the collagen fibers will gradually diminish, and the elastin fibers in the epidermis thin out, as well as the production of cells decreased.

The skin becomes thin, loses its elasticity, saggy, and wrinkles appear.

Extrinsic causes (extrinsic skin aging): Due to the effects of external factors such as: sunlight, environmental pollution, chemicals, smoke…

The skin is the part that contacts directly with the environment, and suffers the first impact from external factors: wind, dust, sunlight, x-ray, radioactive rays…

Under these factors, the collagen fibers as well as the elastin fibers are degenerated, the thickness of the skin changes, the melanocytes in the epidermis decrease, with little blood vessels appearing. The skin has a dark yellow color with many small wrinkles. In addition, the skin that is exposed to the sunlight such as: face, arm, palm will have a decrease and increase of pigmentation. These are the signs showing the skin is “degrading”. This degradation gives a warning to the aging process that is slowly penetrating the skin.

However, the changes on the skin surface during the aging process are very diverse, and there will be different distinct aging signs that vary from different ages. Not only is it a typical pigmentation disorder, like the appearance of benign tumors on the skin (red moles, age spots, brown, black, or gray spots, spots, or scaly…), but they are also clear, typical signs at each age.

Skin aging ages and preventive measures

The period and ages of aging varies between everyone. The skin can have risks of aging anytime without proper care. Especially, for some people who expose much to the sunlight without protection, the skin can start to age at over 20 years old, but these signs haven’t shown clearly, and are difficult to identify.

However, according to statistics, the condition of skin aging appears the most in between 30 to 35 years old. The causes of skin aging for women at this age are the unevenness of certain hormones, weakening the body’s self-repair ability, the amount of fat cells beneath the skin as well as elastic fibers decreased, causing the skin to thin and dry, as well as muscles slowly sagging and becoming loose. The skin cells in adults increasingly divide less, so the skin easily becomes dry, bruised, and blood clotted, the skin functions also declines significantly. This is the period when the skin’s resistance significantly decreases, making it susceptible to internal changes in the body environmental issues, such as:

At 30 years old:  The skin loses its smoothness, pores enlarge, and even a few wrinkles appear.

At 40 years old: The wrinkles which have formed since 30 years old will deepen more, exposed, and together with wrinkles on the forehead. The “crow’s feet” at the eye corners also begin to appear, the skin becomes dull and lacks vitality.

At 50, 60 years old: The wrinkles will become more numerous, and the skin will be drier and rougher.

They are the signs of:

- Little and large wrinkles.
- Freckles and melasma.
- Loose skin.
- Uneven skin color.
- Darkened skin.
- Large pores.
- Rough skin.
